Wan Gang, president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) met with a World Economic Forum (WEF) delegation headed by its founder and executive chairman Klaus Schwab in Beijing on April 25, 2019.

The two sides held in-depth discussions on how to deepen cooperation in the context of the ongoing fourth industrial revolution.

Shu Wei, executive secretary of CAST, also attended the meeting.

Wan briefed the visiting delegation CAST's history and basic information.

He said that as a mass organization for China's science and technology professionals, CAST is willing to deepen exchanges and cooperation with WEF, explore a cooperation mode that works for both sides, and actively participate in and contribute to global governance reform scientifically, economically and socially.

Speaking of the changes and ethical issues resulting from the fourth industrial revolution and new technologies, Wan stressed that science and technology must serve no other purpose than the benefit of mankind and people should always be the center.

Schwab introduced to the CAST side WEF's engagement in science and technology, especially its approach to the fourth industrial revolution.

He believed that the fourth industrial revolution is not just a technological revolution but will also have an impact on business model, economy and society, therefore raising the question of how to create global governance systems for new technologies and how to create necessary norms and frameworks.

What WEF is doing is creating a global network of centers for the fourth industrial revolution that will bring together government, business and science to jointly define the opportunities, consequences and risks of new technologies, said Schwab.

He described China as a pillar in global cooperation and hoped to include China into its global network of centers through cooperation with CAST.
