Video symposium promotes China-Sweden research cooperation on COVID-19

It is the common will of science and technology workers of the two countries to promote research cooperation between China and Switzerland on covid-19.

The Zhigong Party Central Committee and the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) called a video symposium on promoting China-Sweden research cooperation on COVID-19 on March 8, 2020.

Among the attendees were Wan Gang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), president of CAST, and chairman of the Zhigong Party Central Committee; Jiang Zuojun, member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, deputy secretary general of the CPPCC National Committee and executive vice chairman of the Zhigong Party Central Committee; Yan Xiaopei, member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, deputy director of the Committee for Liaison with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese of the CPPCC National Committee, and vice chairman of the Zhigong Party Central Committee; Zhao Jiajun, vice chairman of the CPPCC Shandong Committee, chairman of the Zhigong Party Shandong Committee, and director of the Medical and Health Committee of the Zhigong Party Central Committee; and Shu Wei, executive secretary of CAST.

In his speech, Wan Gang expressed appreciation for the ingenious effort of medical science workers both at home and abroad to battle the COVID-19 epidemic.

He noted that under the instructions of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the joint efforts both at home and abroad, the situation in China is getting better and better and China has accumulated many successful experiences in epidemic prevention and control.

He stressed that as the COVID-19 outbreak goes worldwide, it has become a global challenge, and all countries, especially their medical technology workers, need to join hands and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.

Wan also said that promoting China-Sweden research cooperation on COVID-19 is the common will of the two countries’ science and technology workers and a practical need as well.

He proposed that medical technology workers of both countries jointly suggest novel diagnoses and therapies, review and improve existing methodologies, deepen basic research, communicate science to the public, and carry out research cooperation.

Shu Wei introduced the work CAST has done to communicate COVID-19 knowledge to the general public, to advise policy-makers and to promote international cooperation since the outbreak of the epidemic, using its advantages in academic resources, science communication and mobilization of think tanks.

Yan Xiaopei gave a briefing on the proposals Chinese and international medical scientists and technologists have made through Zhigong Party and the effects of the proposals.

Dai Gang, science and technology counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Sweden, introduced the China-Sweden framework agreement for science and technology cooperation and the efforts of the Sweden science community to fight the epidemic.

An official from the Ministry of Science and Technology introduced the work of the Scientific and Technological Research Task Force of the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council.

Cao Yihai, president of the Nordic Zhigong Association, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and tenured professor at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, introduced what China and Sweden envision for their science and technology cooperation.

Chinese experts attending the symposium introduced the efforts of different localities in China to battle the epidemic and related scientific research.

Also attending the symposium were Liu Yang, director general of the CAST Department of International Affairs, Luo Hui, director of the China International Communication Center for Science and Technology, Zhao Xiaoping, deputy head of liaison of the Zhigong Party Central Committee, Tao Yisheng, vice chairman of the Zhigong Party Anhui Committee and director of the Anhui Health Commission, Chen Yuguo, president of the Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Zhang Zhaofeng, head of biomedicine, Department of Science and Technology for Social Development, Ministry of Science and Technology, and Ye Peiqun, board chairman of the Nordic Zhigong Association.
